Chag’s Anime North 2011 Adventure

Ah, Anime North – the annual pilgrimage for tens of thousands of weeaboos in the northeastern part of North America. I have been to the convention four times thus far, but during those visits I tended to stick exclusively to my group of friends and typically wandered aimlessly through the dealer’s room and outdoors amongst the cosplayers. I’ve always had a good time, and it’s hard not to – combine in a group of good friends and the infectious cheerfulness on the convention grounds, and the good times come to you by themselves.

But this year my plan was different – maybe it’s because of blogging, but I was eager to meet new people and do new things. I paid 55 bucks to get into this freak show, and by God I was going to make good of every penny! If Anime North was a seal, then I would be the hungry Eskimo, waiting to descend on his prey and take every chunk of it back to his igloo.

In Canada, Hockey season is ALWAYS on — even during an Anime Convention.

So how did the convention turn out? The shorter answer would be that it was like a rollercoaster ride – both fun and nauseating. As for the long answer, hit the jump to find out! Read more »

Double H: Episode 2

Bam, another episode of Double H! This week we loosened up on the structure and time limits, so it ended up being a two-parter. In the first half we talk a bit about the new eye candy from the Mega Hobby Expo 2011 (all links open up new windows):

  • 0:43 – ALTER’s Kasugano Sora
  • 5:01 – ALTER’s Aegis

In the second half, we revisit some of the figures that we’ve talked about before, but with more starfish nipples and giraffe people:

  • 0:01 – ALTER’s Black Hanekawa
  • 2:25 – Megahouse’s Captain Liliana
  • 4:18 – RAH Black Rock Shooter

So what do you think? If you like it, please give it a thumbs up and/or a favourite, as this would make it easier for strangers to bump into the video on YouTube. If you really like it, pimp us out — tweet about it or give it a mention somewhere! We’re probably not good enough for that yet, but I want to ride this pony far. Who knows — maybe we’ll eventually get big enough to become a partner channel and get around that pesky 15-minute limit! It’s a long shot, sure, but you gotta start somewhere, right? 😉

I know I said that Double H would be a “podcast” in episode 0, but in all honesty, I don’t really understand what a podcast is. For a visual-dependent show like this, I think I’m going to leave it on YouTube for the time being. From what I understand, there are video podcasts out there, but I’m not sure how to integrate that with the blog itself, and that leaves me all kind of confused. I’ll leave that battle for another day!

By the way, I (Chag) will be attending Anime North this weekend. I’m not deluded enough to think that we have a big following, but if you happen to be there and if you see a guy wearing a black hat, glasses and a black Hobby Hovel T-shirt, make sure to come up to say hi — it would make me all sorts of giddy if you do. =)

Review: 1/8 Yakumo Yukari

When we took a look at Suika and I managed to determine Griffon’s “quality control” is still absolutely abysmal, but also that they do have it in them to make a pretty decent figure in spite of this large handicap. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at the only other Touhou figure they’ve made since then that has managed to pique my interest…Yakumo Yukari!

First I’d like to apologize for the delay on this review…Originally it was because she took so long to get to me, but during the course of that I determined I didn’t have the proper equipment to do the shots I wanted of her so this was cause for further delay. Hopefully the resulting eye candy will be enough for you to forgive my lateness. Or not…*explanation at the end* Read more »

Double H: Episode 1

After the Golden Week break, Double H is back with its first “official” episode — now on YouTube! Here’s what we ranted about this week (links will open a new window):

  • 0:17 – Megahouse’s Captain Liliana
  • 3:58 – ALTER’s Black Hanekawa
  • 8:37 – Good Smile Company’s charity goods.

I confess I’m still pretty tense on the microphone this week, especially with the new under-15-minute goal in mind (you wouldn’t believe how many takes it took for me to say the introduction). But thanks to all your feedback, we were able to make the show a lot more focused this time around. The annoying clicking noises are gone too, now that Ashlotte has got a new headset. The show sure as hell isn’t perfect yet, but I’m pretty with the progress made since episode 0. I still have to figure out this whole podcast distribution thing, though, but for the time being I’m going to throw these on YouTube.

Once again, comments and feedback would be greatly appreciated — feel free to tell us how much we suck! =D
