Hobby Hovel: One Year Later

One week ago on October 21, 2010, Hobby Hovel reached its one-year mark. The saying “time flies when you’re having fun” is one that gets thrown around frequently, but when I look back upon the past year I’ve spent blogging about figures, toys and plamo, it feels anything but short – indeed, it feels as if I’ve been doing this forever. Maybe this is because Hobby Hovel has become the punctuation of my life’s story. Instead whizzing by the weeks and months like a free-falling rock, the blog has given me the occasion to pause and invest myself into this project week after week. In a way, blogging has validated my own existence. As frivolous as ranting about Japanese collectables may seem from a stranger’s perspective, it is nevertheless an activity in which I construct meaning for myself.

Since the activity of growing and maintaining Hobby Hovel has become such a pivotal part of my life, it only makes sense to reflect on the past year when the occasion arises. So without further ado, strap yourselves in for some dense bricks of text coming your way!

Weekly Highlights: Nightmares

Chag: Fuck it, I give up. Between the inconsistencies in the amount of figures that are released every week and real life nonsense, keeping “Weekly Highlights” weekly is getting really, really hard. Looks like these rants will join the reviews and Vocaloid Corner in the “whenever-I-feel-like-it” schedule. Man, we are running this place into the ground, aren’t we?

Well, since this thing isn’t going to be weekly anymore, we’re going to need a new name. Got any ideas?

Ashlotte: “The not so weekly highlights” or I will also accept “The update formerly known as weekly”. >_>

Chag: Gee, kind of a mouthful, don’t you think? Ohhh, I got it, how about “figure fart”?

Ashlotte: …I don’t think so.

Chag: Shucks. Well, we have until the next entry to think of a name. so get cracking! On that note, if you (the reader) have a spiffy idea you’d like to share, be sure to throw it in the comments below!

Review: 1/8 Masou Shizuka

P1000995 copy

Well, the rain may have let up, but the clouds still linger. so y’all are gonna have to bear with Alter’s Masou Shizuka this time instead of Menace!

I’ve actually had this figure for a long time now, but I struggled with how to photograph her in a way that would do justice to her bright color scheme… Don’t know if I succeeded here, but hopefully it’s ok (I feel like I’ve gotten woefully rusty in my skill lately… Lack of motivation?).

Weekly Highlights: Familiar Faces

Chag: Since I am drawing a complete blank for a proper intro to this week’s rant, I’m going to go completely off-topic and talk  about something else: out of the sixty-odd subscribers to Hobby Hovel, are there any PS3 players who are looking forward to Call of Duty: Black Ops? Though I haven’t been playing the PS3 at all recently, I’m getting really excited about this game, so much so that I’ve been considering shelling out some money for a decent headset. The problem? I don’t have any real-life friends to play multiplayer with.

So, is anyone up for some Black Ops when November swings around? Maybe get to know this fabulous and handsome plamo/figure blogger? 😉 I know I’m looking forward to being carried credit to team, be it competitive multiplayer or zombie mode. I was a pretty average player (around a 1.5 K/D, I think?) back when I played to fourth prestige in Modern Warfare 2, but I’ve been watching a lot of gameplay videos recently, so perhaps my game has been improved somewhat since then. My PSN ID is Chag89, and I hope to see you online! =)
